Attention to all buyers and sellers on Facebook!
Facebook, the most used social network, has recently introduced Marketplace to make it easier for all Facebook users in the world buy and sell their most valued items.
More people sign in on Facebook and setup pages as a channel for item transactions. Indeed, it’s a good venue if you’re looking for a convenient way of finding the items based on your needs and wants. We all know for a fact that all – if not most – of the people spend too much time on Facebook.
The recent Facebook app update, the Marketplace, is designed to give an ease in finding items and transact with the buyer or seller to pick up the item you bought online. Facebook also promises to continuously build new options and features so you’ll have the best buy and sell experience online.
How does the Marketplace work?
Mary Ku, director of Facebook product management, discusses the different functions of Marketplace.
Discover Items for Sale Near You
Marketplace opens with photos of items that people near you have listed for sale. To find something specific, search at the top and filter your results by location, category or price. You can also browse what’s available in a variety of categories such as Household, Electronics and Apparel. Use the built-in location tool to adjust the region you’re looking in, or switch to a different city altogether.
When you find something interesting, tap on the image to see more details from the seller, including a product description, the name and profile photo of the seller, and their general location. You can also save the item to find it later.
Decided that you want it? Send the seller a direct message from Marketplace to tell them you’re interested and make an offer. From that point on, you and the seller can work out the details in any way you choose. Facebook does not facilitate the payment or delivery of items in Marketplace.
Post Items for Sale in Just a Few Steps
Selling an item in Marketplace is just as easy as browsing for one. Simply:
- Take a photo of your item, or add it from your camera roll
- Enter a product name, description and price
- Confirm your location and select a category

The Marketplace is said to be rolling out to Facebook users over 18 years old. Australia will be one of just four countries to receive Facebook’s online store at launch, although retail experts warned it could put pressure on our existing internet traders such as eBay and Gumtree. Aside from Australia, countries such as US, UK, and New Zealand get the first look of Marketplace.
Currently, the Facebook app update is available for iPhone and Android. As the Marketplace expansion plan continues, we can expect that a desktop version will roll out in the coming months.
